Edward James was called to the Bar in 2002.
Prior to joining Ropewalk Chambers, he practised for five years in Chambers in London. During his first few years at the Bar, he accepted instructions in all aspects of criminal as well as civil work, gaining extensive and invaluable advocacy experience in both the criminal and civil courts.
He joined Ropewalk Chambers in 2008 and his practice is now principally civil based, with a particular emphasis on personal injury litigation.
He has a successful and busy nationwide court practice which includes all aspects of personal injury law. He acts for both Claimants and Defendants in roughly equal measure at fast track and multi track level.
Alongside a busy court practice, he has developed a thriving advisory service where he is continuously advising on liability, quantum and tactics as well as drafting statements of case for both Claimants and Defendants.
He regularly accepts instructions on a Conditional Fee Agreement basis.
Personal Injury
He acts for both Claimants and Defendants in all aspects of personal injury law.
He has a successful and busy nationwide practice covering the full spectrum of personal injury litigation.
He conducts trials on a regular basis at both fast track and multi track level.
He also appears at CICA and CRU appeals.
Clinical Negligence
He has a keen interest in developing his clinical negligence practice and he has already advised on a number of interesting clinical negligence claims.
Disease
His personal injury work includes industrial disease litigation and he has recently been led successfully defending an asbestos claim in the Newcastle County Court.
Fraudulent Claims
He has a wealth of experience in dealing with fraudulent claims and he has found that his background in conducting criminal jury trials in the Crown Court has greatly assisted him in conducting these types of claims.
He has had substantial exposure to cases arising out of road traffic accidents and he has a particular interest in defending claims in which dishonesty or exaggeration is suspected.
He has been instructed on numerous claims involving alleged motor insurance fraud including staged accidents, phantom passenger claims and low velocity impact cases.
He regularly drafts robust Defences to claims where fraud is suspected.
Regulatory
He has experience in a range of work that is incorporated within the regulatory group. In particular, he has experience in dealing with health and safety related matters in both the criminal and civil courts as well as civil actions against the police.
Costs
He has substantial costs experience having dealt with costs litigation throughout his career at the Bar.
He regularly advises on costs and frequently conducts Detailed Assessment hearings on behalf of both Claimants and Defendants.
He has recently successfully defended a costs appeal that stemmed from a Detailed Assessment hearing and the Appellant is currently seeking leave to the Court of Appeal.
General
Away from the Bar, he has a young family who keep him extremely busy. He is a keen sportsman and his interests include rugby, skiing, sailing and walking in the Yorkshire Dales.
