Alexandra Pountney

Call: 2014

She is a Benefactors Scholar of the Middle Temple and received the Kalisher Internship Award in recognition in of her potential to succeed at the Bar.

She has worked both as a paralegal in clinical negligence and at the Criminal Cases Review Commission where she drafted submissions to the Ministry of Justice on proposed legislative changes to the law of joint enterprise.

Alexandra enjoys a broad civil practice with a healthy mix of Claimant and Defendant work. Her particular interests lie in clinical negligence, disease, counter-fraud and Animals Act work, but as a member of all of Chambers’ practice groups she welcomes instructions across the board.

Since joining Chambers in 2016, Alexandra has represented parties in Multi Track, Fast Track and Small Claims disputes.

With an eye for detail, Alexandra regularly advises on procedure, liability and quantum in high-value and complex negligence cases. She is able to familiarise herself with voluminous and challenging medical evidence and records in a short time frame.

Alexandra has provided advice on claims brought under the Animals Act 1971 in relation to horses, dogs and cattle. She has an interest in expanding her work in this area.

Alexandra has a developing disease practice and has advised in conference and writing in cases involving hand-arm vibration syndrome, noise-induced hearing loss and industrial dermatitis.

Similarly, she benefits from a developing employment law practice, including experience in dealing with discrimination claims, unfair and constructive dismissal. She was recently successful in securing judgment for a Claimant a five-day trial involving a claim for discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation.

During her pupillage, Alexandra assisted with legal research in the landmark case of Zurich v Hayward [2016] UKSC 48. In her own right, she regularly advises and provides representation to Claimants and Defendants in cases where allegations of fraud have been pleaded.

Alexandra is robust in oral and written advocacy: she was awarded the BPTC Advocacy Prize for obtaining the highest marks in her graduating year at Bar School. She won the No5 Chambers Advocacy Competition 2014. She was a finalist and semi-finalist, respectively, in the GDL and BPTC University of Law mooting competitions.

Away from the Bar, Alexandra enjoys travel, yoga and has a love of wildlife.
