Chris’ practice spans all areas of Chambers’ work, with a particular focus on personal injury, counter fraud, criminal regulatory, commercial and clinical negligence.

Over the years, Chris has had a mixed civil and criminal practice but concentrated mainly on criminal matters, being a Grade 3 Prosecutor. He rapidly became a highly respected for his advocacy and cross-examination skills, honed when conducting cases involving serious sexual offences, child-abuse, fraud, fatal motoring offences and tax evasion.

He joined Ropewalk Chambers in 2014, to concentrate on our core areas, particularly personal injury and those with a criminal element.

Chris is committed to providing a service of the highest level to all his clients and, with his previous experience, can bring an additional dimension to cases that need to be fought.

Away from the Bar, Chris enjoys participating and watching sport, running and reading. He is also a skillful conjurer.

Personal Injury

Chris is frequently instructed across a range of person injury matters. His current caseload includes claims involving accidents at work, road traffic accidents, Highways and public liability claims.

He often acts in cases concerning fatal accidents and traumatic amputation. He also appears frequently at Coroner’s inquests.

Counter Fraud

For many years, Chris prosecuted and defended all aspects of fraud work. He is able to draw on this considerable advocacy experience and cross-examination skills when defending fraudulent claims on behalf of insurers, particularly in the motor sphere.

He has considerable experience of pursuing asset recoveries, following the successful defence of a claim, including freezing injunctions and subsequent enforcement action.

Disease

Chris undertakes many disease claims. He is particularly experienced in claims involving noise-induced hearing loss, work-related upper limb disorders and hand-arm vibration syndrome.

Criminal Regulatory

Chris has prosecuted, defended and mitigated on behalf of those charged with breach of waste disposal licenses and environmental offences.

He has prosecuted and defended at all levels (Court of Appeal, Crown Court and Magistrates’ Court) those charged with offences prosecuted by various Local Authorities and Trading Standards Departments pursuant to their statutory enforcement duties, including benefit fraud and consumer protection offences and in particular offences contrary to the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.

He has also advised (pre-charge) on the suitability of charges and the admissibility of evidence gathered during the investigation.

Commercial Dispute Resolution

Chris has experience of a wide range of cases involving allegations of tax evasion, piercing of the corporate ‘veil’ and director liability.

Recent instructions include representing one of eight defendants charged with involvement in an alleged £5 million tax evasion conspiracy.

Chris has advised and appeared in a range of cases involving alleged breach intellectual property rights, particularly in relation to tobacco products, cosmetics and leading sports brand clothing.

He has considerable experience of conducting ‘confiscation’ proceedings pursuant to the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, which frequently arise after at the conclusion of such cases.

Clinical Negligence

Chris has a particular interest in clinical negligence. He has represented families at inquests in circumstances where clinical negligence proceedings are likely to follow. He also has experience of advising both Claimants and Defendants where there are complex issues of breach of duty and causation.

Chris is experience in drafting proceedings and advising upon the value of such claims and appreciates the need for sensitivity and understanding.
