Sam studied law at the University of Durham. He undertook the BPTC at Nottingham Law School and was ranked first in his year in employment litigation.
Alongside his studies, Sam volunteered as an employment representative with FRU and as a legal advisor with IPSEA, a charity which provides free advice on local education authorities’ legal duties to assess and provide for children with special educational needs.
Before undertaking pupillage, Sam initially worked as a paralegal in a large law firm. He acted predominantly for Defendants, but also for Claimants, in road traffic matters. He developed an extensive knowledge of the pre-litigation and litigation processes and gained, in particular, a considerable understanding of personal injury practice.
Sam then worked as an advocate via a large nationwide advocacy agency. He acted for Claimants and Defendants in small claims track hearings, disposal hearings, contested MOJ Stage 3 hearings, child settlement approval hearings, interim applications and CMC’s. He also drafted advices on quantum in respect of personal injury claims brought on behalf of children.
As a result of his success as an advocate, Sam was asked to join the advocacy agency’s management team. He continued with his own advocacy work and, in addition, managed other advocates’ hearings and provided them with training and assistance at court.
Away from the Bar, Sam enjoys playing squash, walking in the countryside and listening to his collection of 70’s rock vinyl. Despite his fondness of the old music medium, Sam has a keen interest in modern technology and, during his BPTC, developed the iPhone application ‘Legal Calculator’.
